Are you an experienced AWS Engineer with a passion for building robust cloud infrastructure to solve real-world environmental challenges?

We are seeking a Senior AWS Engineer to lead cloud architecture across our environmental and geospatial projects. Working within the Technology, Data and Software Development (TDSD) team, you will design and operate enterprise cloud environments that handle large data workloads for the natural and built environment.

Our clients include national governments, environmental agencies, infrastructure operators, and international development bodies. They rely on us for resilient systems that process complex spatial and environmental datasets at scale. Alongside hands-on technical architecture, you will help shape technical proposals for new work and steer our cloud engineering practices.

You will be joining an award-winning environmental and engineering consultancy which puts innovation, sustainability and resilience at the heart of its work.

We are independent and staff-owned under a stewardship model which drives long term decision making and investment. We have offices in the UK, Ireland, Romania, India, Singapore and Australia. Our people are all important and we invest heavily in life-long learning and skills development.

Your role

As a Senior AWS Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across multiple projects, shaping cloud architecture approaches and ensuring the delivery of highly resilient, secure, and scalable infrastructure. You will work closely with project managers, software developers, and data scientists to scope work, manage delivery, and embed appropriate levels of cloud expertise into multi-disciplinary project teams.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

• Implementing and managing infrastructure-as-code (IaC) workflows using tools such as Terraform.
• Configuring and managing containerised applications and orchestration platforms, including Docker, ECS or Kubernetes.
• Administering and maintaining both Windows, Linux and cloud-native environments to support application deployment and data processing at scale.
• Writing robust automation and configuration scripts using Python, Bash, PowerShell, or other relevant tools.
• Authoring and maintaining technical documentation, including As-Built designs and operational procedures.
• Communicating complex technical cloud architecture and security findings clearly to both specialist and non-technical stakeholders.
• Contributing to proposal writing and work-winning activities, including architecture design, costing, and articulating the value of cloud solutions.
• Providing mentoring and technical guidance to early-career engineers and developers, supporting their professional development.

A strong sense of quality, system security, and clear communication are essential.

Qualifications

Applicants will have:
• Significant commercial experience designing, deploying, and managing enterprise cloud environments within the AWS ecosystem.
• Strong practical experience administering both Windows and Linux environments.

• Excellent working knowledge of infrastructure-as-code tools, particularly Terraform .
• In-depth configuration management, automation, and scripting skills.
• Practical knowledge of platform and application automated deployment technologies.
• Exposure to iterative/agile development methodologies and a track record of enabling team delivery.
• Experience acting as a technical lead or subject-matter expert within multi-disciplinary project teams.

Essential attributes for the role

Further, you will be someone who:
• Ideally holds an AWS Associate Certification or higher, and/or relevant specialty certifications.
• Is willing to contribute to bids and proposals, including scoping and costing cloud infrastructure.
• Enjoys supporting teams and creating an environment where developers can excel.
• Is comfortable making technical decisions and providing clear guidance to teams.

Desirable attributes for the role

Other desirable attributes for the role include:
• Experience or interest in working with large-scale environmental, geospatial, or hydrological data systems.
• Familiarity with modern DevOps practices and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
